Thomas Turns the Dirty Thirty!

Just over a week ago, my darling husband passed a major life landmark by turning 30.  He graciously accepted his fate and has since succumbed to being... old.

To celebrate his newly-obtained oldness the family got together the preceding Saturday at my mom's house, as is the usual custom.  The birthday kid always gets to pick what they want for dinner and Thomas, being old, picked chili and cornbread with chocolate-frosted yellow cake for dessert.  I tried my darned-est to make it a Star Wars themed party, but it ended up being rather pathetic.  Behold:

Boba Fett snow flake

Storm Trooper snow flake

I forgot to take pictures of them, but I also made (and by "I made," I mean to say that my mom made them and Jin Mee cut them out, I simply supplied the cookie cutters) Tie Fighter and Millennium Falcon cornbread pieces.  And then there was the crowning jewel... the Darth Vader made out of powered sugar atop the cake.  It... didn't quite turn out as I hoped:

Take this printable pattern, plus:

this dramatic chipmunk, and you end up with:

Dramatic Vader!

*shaking my head*  Well, whatever, it still tasted good.  Moving along...

I love Anna's shirt.  It speaks truth.

After dinner, it was time for presents, since Anna was quickly turning into a gremlin (we forgot you aren't supposed to feed those things...).

A watch from David and Kim

Oooo Trigun movie!  From Jonathan and Jin Mee

Eva 2.0 from Jonathan and Jin Mee.  I suppose I'll be forced to watch these at some point...

Anna and Uncle Jon making their own fun

You look good holding a baby, Jonathan.  ...just sayin'...

Thomas' gift from me...

Tickets to go see Tool in concert!!  Yeah, I'm awesome.

Last was Mom's gift.  For each kid's 30th birthday, she's gotten them a picture that she feels represents them, along with a heartstring-tugging explanation.

Thomas got a picture of...

the ocean!  Because "there's way more going on than what can be seen from the surface."

Mom explaining the picture to Thomas.  I have video of this but it's, uh, pretty long.  Suffice to say, it was heartstring-tugging.

And that wrapped up the evening.  On Tuesday night, the day after his birthday, we went to the Tool concert.  It was in Tucson, so it was a bit of a drive.

We look hard-core, right?  Right???....

We stopped at Cousin's to get some dinner on the way.

I told Thomas to take a picture of me, and the turd took a picture of the SIGN with me at the bottom of the frame.

Getting the party started with a little Tiny Dancer.  Yes, I'm singing with my eyes closed, but it wasn't that bad because we were in stop-and-go traffic at the time.

Short stop to investigate a funny noise (don't worry, Mom, it was nothing)

Aaaand here we come to the really LAME part of the post where we couldn't take any pictures inside.  ANY.  Thomas tried to take a picture of me with his phone, like, an HOUR before the concert started and we got yelled at by some wrinkly old guy in a Security shirt.  So, we behaved for the duration of our time inside.  No one else did, though.  And, not surprisingly, no one else got yelled at, either.  LE SIGH.  So yeah, we have NO pictures of us enjoying Tool.  Or pictures of Maynard singing Happy Birthday to Thomas (well, TECHNICALLY some guy named Dave, but whatever).

We did, however, get FREE PARKING on the street RIGHT next to the venue.

Driving home

And there you have it.  We drove back to Mesa, picked up our sweet, sleepy baby from Grammy's house and then all passed out as soon as we got home.

Happy birthday, Thomas!

(Yeah it's out of focus... I'm no cameraman, alright???)
